The Southeastern Illinois Geologic Map Compilation project produced edge-matched and updated GeMS compliant ArcGIS bedrock geologic databases of thirty-nine 7.5-minute quadrangle geologic maps in southeastern Illinois. Bedrock geologists reviewed GIS datasets and provided quality assurance on both geology and spatial orientation for 39 individual 7.5-minute quadrangles. Most of these quadrangles were mapped from the mid-1980s through 2019; nine original geologic maps of the project area were produced to complete the regional coverage area (Table 1).
As these maps were originally completed by different ISGS geologists over a time span of more than 35 years, there were disagreements between adjoining quadrangles. The most significant technical issues encountered were different mapped formation boundaries, fault locations, and disparate stratigraphic nomenclature. Inconsistent mapping of Quaternary units and/or glacial cover from map to map in some mapped areas were addressed. When possible, project geologist Jeremy Breeden worked with the original quadrangle author/s to address geologic incongruities.
ArcGIS work to update older GIS products to better align geologically and be compatible with the USGS geologic map schema (GeMS) was accomplished by Jeremy Breeden and Emily Bunse.
